This research team has developed a three-part research program to support increased utilization of ash wood in the emerald ash borer eradication area:

  • They have created a set of display materials and a companion brochure. The displays feature cabinet doors, flooring, molding, decorative corner pieces, vents, and other wood products made from ash. All of the wood for these displays was obtained from one of the state's ash disposal sites. The products were manufactured by local secondary processors. The displays have been very well received by the public at a number of events, workshops, and meetings throughout Southeast Michigan.
  • The team is currently studying the effectiveness of Preventol and Borate whole log insecticide treatments in killing EAB larvae. If proven successful, these treatments could eliminate the current geographical limitations in finding available ash wood markets.
  • They are also researching treatments to expand the use of ash in outdoor projects by using waterborne copper amine-based preservatives. Treated lumber will be subjected to controlled weathering, evaluated for suitability in outdoor applications, and then used to build outdoor demonstration structures (likely decks and fenceposts).
